It's been a slow painful day today. The only emails I got vaguely related to working where from a spammy job finder site and someone emailed me about volunteer work which wasn't really helpful as I thought I had applied for it and now I have to ring a number to apply again, it also doesn't help it didn't mention which position it was for, as I applied for more than one. So I might ring up tomorrow and see what it's all about.

Filled in another horrible application form, I am starting to hate them more and more. Just because of the stupid tables put in which have to be re-formated because someone had put in a crazy big front size and bold titles everywhere. HMV, Waterstones, Boots etc. have a really nice simple online application, which really should be the standard of applying online, none of this emailing application forms which have been designed to be filled in by hand and posted. I know they're a big company and they can afford to have someone develop them for them, but really with the majority of people job hunting on the internet, wouldn't be a lot easier to have an application form which puts all applicants details into a database straight away, therefore having a paper-free application process (far better for the environment, easier to find, need less space) and you wouldn't lose applicants information unless you kill your system, and in that case you should have a backup system anyway. I really do hate word based application forms, I always send them back as PDF's as well so no one can delete any text off it by accident.

While I'm on a bit of a rant as well, it's really annoying me that some business where I've applied for jobs don't send me an email back saying they've received it, less than half do. And then even less people send an email back telling you when you should expect to hear back about interview dates. If I had a business, I would make sure everyone knew what was going on, surely clear communication is one of the big things than many employers want, and quite frankly a large majority from my experience don't have that towards applicants. I feel really pushy calling employers to ask about how my application is going, but there is no other way to do it. I have taken the time to decide that this is a job I could enjoy, and a company I would like to work for, read though your job description, filled in an application form which I do think about and personalize every application, CV and covering letter I do. If you could find the time just to tell me when I should expect to hear from you, that would put my mind at ease and help me relax a little bit. I know you must be very busy, and I know you must get a lot of applications for any vacancy you put out, but an extra 10 minutes to email the people who have given your business the time of day would be polite.
